Natural Disasters

When it comes to disasters, short of full scale nuclear war few man made disasters can compare to the damage Mother Nature can dish out in just a few seconds. She doesn't really care about the well being of you and your family at all so you had better plan ahead in case she ends up targeting where you live for an attack by one of the highly destructive weapons she has in the natural disaster arsenal.

Get prepared for the next Hurricane at Hurricanes: Everyone knows that hurricanes are a world-wide weather phenomena that have have brought massive devastation to areas and people who were not prepared. Hurricanes Katrina, Andrew, Irene,Sandy and others have caused damage that not only killed people but destroyed entire regions. Once they fade from the news headlines we don’t hear about each hurricane as frequently but the damage they have caused often takes months or even years to repair.

Don’t make the mistake of underestimating the power of a hurricane; even smaller Category 1 and 2 hurricanes can produce high winds and torrential rain that can reach hundreds of miles inland causing wind damage and widespread flooding. Unlike many disasters which happen without warning, you will normally receive several days warning of an impending hurricane so there is really no excuse to be unprepared.

Get prepared for the next Tornado at Tornadoes: The recent string of horrific tornadoes in Oklahoma show the entire country what those that live in “tornado alley” already know: in a matter of mere minutes nature can turn deadly. What may start out as a a string of thunderstorms can rapidly become a swirling EF3 or stronger tornado with 150+ miles/hour winds cruising across the country side at up to 50 miles/hour destroying everything in its path.

While more common in the mid-west, tornadoes can happen anywhere at anytime - even over open water (called "waterspouts") and no one is immune from their destructive power. They can strike with little or no warning so you need to have your plan and supplies ready to go in advance. A little planning now can save you from catastrophe later.

Get prepared for the next Earthquake at Earthquakes: Most notably around the Pacific Rim - the so called “Ring of Fire” - earthquakes happen regularly both in open country and densely populated areas. They strike suddenly without warning and in a matter of seconds can level buildings, collapse highways and destroy critical infrastructure. A single earthquake can take an entire country by surprise and cause wide-spread devastation.

Earthquakes, and the tsunamis they often trigger, can damage or destroy vital infrastructure. And no place on earth is safe! Long dormant fault lines exist even in places that are not used to experiencing earthquakes and they can become active at any time with devastating results.

Get prepared for a Volcano at Volcanoes: Don't think volcanoes represent a risk to you or your family? Think again! While most common around the Pacific "Ring of Fire", would it surprise you to learn that nearly 90% of the population of the United States lives within the potential danger zone of active or dormant volcanoes?

Because of their tremendous release of energy, volcanic eruptions can trigger a variety of other secondary disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis, massive mud slides, avalanches, ash clouds and more, often at great distance from the eruption itself. When Mt. St. Helens, a fairly small volcano as volcanoes go, erupted in 1980 the effects were still felt for hundreds of miles and a number of years.

Get prepared for a Tsunami at Tsunamis: Triggered by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, tsunamis propagate through open ocean at speeds of up to 500 miles/hour and can completely destroy coastal areas thousands of miles away. Surging as much as one hundred miles inland, the majority of the Earth’s population lives in coastal regions at risk from major tsunamis.

In addition to flooding coastal areas, tsunamis can have other devastating effects such as the one that recently damaged coastal nuclear reactors located in Fukushima Japan. Scientists agree that we have not fully realized the impact on sea life and the effects of the amount of radiation released worldwide from this disaster! With the many of the world's nuclear power plants located near the coast, you can bet that a Fukushima style disaster WILL happen again.

Get prepared for an Epidemic or Pandemic at Epidemics and Pandemics: Natural epidemics and pandemics have been around as long as mankind. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1919 killed an estimated 50-100 million people worldwide and that was before the era of fast, high volume international air travel. Swine flu, bird flu and other more recent strains have fortunately been stopped before achieving that level of lethality but every year there are new viral strains with which to contend; will we be continue to be so lucky?

The prospect of having to deal with a severe local epidemic or even a worldwide pandemic during your lifetime is very real and should not be ignored. The impact of a major pandemic could last for months with severe impact on all aspects of our day to day lives. (Want to scare yourself silly with a realistic depiction of a severe global pandemic? See Steven Soderbergh's 2011 movie, Contagion!)

Get prepared for a Solar Flare EMP event at Solar Flares: Solar flares are a naturally occurring type of electro-magnetic pulse that occur during periods of increased solar activity. Just like a man-made EMP blast, a solar flare can disable or destroy all non-protected electrical devices including our entire power grid and communications infrastructure.

These days our lives are highly dependent upon electrical power, cellular telephones, the Internet, etc. A major solar flare could cause damage that would be devastating and which could take months or even years to fully repair. History has shown that natural solar EMP events occur in cycles and the potential for damage in the event of a major solar flare event increases as our dependence upon high tech products increases!
